“100 Million Ways To Die” is the first single from indie band PolSky’s forthcoming record, brought to you by Disruptive Element Music. This track has been synced to Apple TV's high profile production, “WeCrashed” – the story of the spectacular rise and demise of the company WeWork, starring Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway – and will feature prominently in Episode 6, Caviar, on Friday 8th April 2022
While the track title might sound nihilistic, this single actually brings an exuberantly positive and therapeutic take. As frontman and songwriter (and self-styled CEO of PolSky Corporation) Kris Warren states: “100 Million Ways to Die was written as a rallying cry of liberation, to fully live one’s life despite living in a genuinely frightening world.”
The single also features a remix from CNB – the alias of Christopher Nicholas Bangs, an in-demand producer and soundtrack composer whose eclectic work also includes co-production for rising artist Nwando Ebizie (supported across the likes of BBC Radio 3 and 6Music).
CNB elaborates, about the track and his rework: “I connected to this song, because of what could be taken as a bleak message but is presented in a glorious and joyous way and turns out ironically to be a song about being alive! So, taking that into consideration, I tried to make it even more anthemic and uplifting by re-harmonising the track and giving it a different groove.”
PolSky was formed by Kris Warren, a songwriter and music producer based in the South East of England – the imaginative and unusual concept of the project being a musical Corporation working for the good of the people. He started mulling over hypotheticals like: “What if PolSky (Corp.) sold cigarettes that were actually good for people’s health?!” (hence the iconic yet ironic artwork design series for this single and its associated remixes).
A respected and accomplished musical polymath, Kris Warren’s career began under the wing of Cocteau Twins' Robin Guthrie, whilst working in their September Sound studio. He paid close attention to Guthrie's production and writing techniques while absorbing ideas from sessions with Echo and the Bunnymen, Terry Hall, Nick Lowe, Billy Mackenzie and many others.
During the noughties, Kris joined agit-pop group BiB on guitar, honing his stage craft on the London live circuit, culminating in a U.K. tour with The XX Teens, and an NME single of the week. Early works under
the PolSky moniker included Kris’s production of two charity albums with students in special educational needs measures. “The Pendragon Recordings” (2011) was facilitated in collaboration with actor and screenwriter Celyn Jones and released to critical acclaim at the Barbican Centre. The album featured collaborations with The English National Orchestra, Idris Elba (Driis) and Gentlemen’s Dub Club amongst many others. The second record, “Globe Sessions” featured artists including Serafina Steer (Jarvis Cocker) and Chris Bangs (Film & TV Composer/CNB).
PolSky (Corp.) has since evolved into a fully-formed, energetic Indie band with the appointment of executive board members: Senior Synth Architect, Ben Warn (keyboards); Rhythm Logistics Engineer, Alex Robertson (drums); and Low Frequency Systems Analyst, Chris Norman (bass). With the corporation fully assembled, they are now adding the final touches to their debut album: a collection of perfectly formed pop songs about corporate zombies, elderly love affairs, brain function, video game addiction and the undeniable human obsession with shouting louder than everyone else.
“100 Million Ways to Die” is the first release to be taken from the debut LP. Written in response to the last couple of years – a time when existential anxiety and the idea of death have been lurking uneasily in our peripheral vision – the upbeat message of the track is that once we find ways to acknowledge and accept these fears, we can live life to the full.
It’s unsurprising that PolSky’s arresting, epic yet nuanced sound has gained high level attention in the world of TV and film, and it is set to connect just as strongly with listeners the world over.
Following the single, there are further remixes scheduled for release by popular dance producers including Taiki Nulight, and then more singles ahead of the release of their LP which is slated for Spring 2023.
